Materials

Instrument Maintenance & Class Materials:

 

Students must have the following materials for class every day:

 

  • Black binder (provided in class)

    • contains music, pocket divider, and pencil pouch. 

    • There is a $6 replacement fee for lost binders

  • At least three working pencils at all times

  • Beginning Band Students: Essential Elements Book 1 

  • Intermediate & Advanced Band Students: breathing tubes (provided in class)

    • There is a $5 replacement fee for lost breathing tubes

  • Instrument/Sticks & Mallets

  • Required instrument materials:

    • Box of Reeds (woodwinds: Clarinet, Saxophone)

    • Valve Oil & Slide Grease (brass)

    • Stick Bag (percussion)

  • Instrument cleaning materials outlined below:

 

Most of these items are included within the instrument rental program or can be purchased at a music store. Upgraded suggestions are listed for 7th and 8th grade students. Please feel free to reach out to a director regarding any questions on these items. Proper maintenance of the instruments will help protect your investment. If you need any financial assistance gathering these items, please contact a director.


 

Flute

  • a tuning/cleaning rod

  • a bandana and a cleaning cloth

 

Oboe/Bassoon

  • at least 3 medium-soft or medium strength reeds (reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically)

  • Small cup for soaking reeds (medicine bottle with label taken off works well)

  • a silk swab

  • cork grease

 

Clarinet

  • an upgrade to one of the following mouthpieces: Vandoren 5RV Lyre or Vandoren B45

    •  This is highly recommended for our 7th & 8th grade students

  • a cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt)

  • other cleaning supplies:  mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease

  • a 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”

 

6th Grade

  • Mitchell Lurie 3.0- Good

  • Vandoren 2.5-Better

  • D'Addario Reserve 2.5- Better

  • Vandoren V12 2.5-Best

 

7th and 8th Grade

  • Vandoren v12 3.0

  • Vandoren 3

  • D'Addario Reserve 3

 

  • Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically. As the clarinetist develops they will also need a harder strength reed

  •  As a general rule, buying the most cost-effective reeds will not provide you the best “bang-for-your-buck”

  • Reeds should be purchased by the box. This can be done through Meyer Music (delivered to the school), Amazon, or another preferred store. This will ensure that students have working reeds at all times

 

Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Bari)

  • an upgrade to the following mouthpiece: Selmer C-star. 

  • a cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt)

  • other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease

  • a 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”

 

6th Grade

  • La Voz Medium- Good

  • Vandoren 2.5- Best

  • D'Addario Reserve 2.5 -Best

 

7th & 8th Grade 

  • Vandoren 3

  • D'Addario Reserve 3

French Horn

  • an upgrade to the following mouthpiece: Holton-Farkas medium cup

  • rotary oil & spindle oil

  • cleaning supplies:  mouthpiece brush, snake brush, slide grease, & brass polishing cloth

  • a rubber mouthpiece pouch

 

Trombone

  •  an upgrade to the following mouthpiece: Bach 6 ½ AL or Schilke 51D small shank

  • supplies including:  super slick slide cream, water spray bottle, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, slide grease and polishing cloth

  • a rubber mouthpiece pouch

 

Euphonium

  • an upgrade to the following mouthpiece: Schilke 51D small shank mouthpiece

  • Cleaning supplies:  mouthpiece brush, snake brush, slide grease, & brass polishing cloth

  • valve oil

  • a rubber mouthpiece pouch

 

Tuba

  • an upgrade to the following mouthpiece: Conn Helleberg standard tuba mouthpiece

  • rotary oil & valve oil

  • cleaning supplies: mouthpiece brush, snake brush, slide grease, & brass polishing cloth

  • a rubber mouthpiece pouch

 

Percussion

  • Vic Firth SD1 sticks

  • Balter 5R mallets

  • ProMark stick/mallet bag

  • Ms. Sanford & Mr. Sarns will communicate upgraded supplies as necessary
